Manager Rob Edwards vowed to keep pushing Sheffield United for the second spot while it remains mathematically possible for the Hatters to win automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Town head to Reading tomorrow evening on the back of a ten-match unbeaten run, knowing that victory will secure a place in the Championship play-offs for a second successive season.
Second-placed Sheffield United are also in great form, however, and they play tonight – kicking off against Bristol City five points above the Hatters with a game in hand.
That means the Hatters could potentially be eight points behind the Blades as they travel to the Select Car Leasing Stadium, but with four matches remaining and the Yorkshire side in FA Cup semi-final action at the weekend while Town take on
“We want to win every game, so at the moment, until someone tells me that we can’t get automatic promotion then we’re going to try and win every game and get every point that’s available to us," Edwards said.
“While something’s possible then we’ve got to try and go for it. We’re well aware of where we’re at and the brilliant position that Sheffield United are in, but we’ve still got to go and get those points and get those wins.
“They’ll be confident they can do that as they’ve done that all season long, but we’ve got four games to go and we want to try and win every one of them.”
The 40-year-old experienced a 19-game unbeaten run while winning promotion from League Two with Forest Green Rovers last season, and he wants his side to savour the moment as they fight at the top end of the division.
“It doesn’t happen often in your career, probably a couple of times in my playing career and I was lucky enough last year to be part of a team that went 19 games unbeaten and we won the league in the end,” said Edwards.
“So I’ve experienced it a few times before, but it is something that when you have it, you’ve got to try and keep it and you’ve got to enjoy it as well.”
Edwards also had this reply when asked about his squad’s work-rate, and how the players always refer to remaining humble in the midst of such an impressive run of form.
“It’s one of the values that we’re really big on,” he said. “We want people to be very respectful, honest, show humility and I think that's great that every single person, whether it’s a member of staff or our players, all have those values and that’s a big part of who we are.”
