MATCH PREVIEW: CARLISLE UNITED V LUTON TOWN

20 April 2018

Sponsored by

The Hatters will look to wrap up promotion to Sky Bet League One this Saturday when they face Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

Three points is all that separates Nathan Jones' side and third tier football at Kenilworth Road next season, but they take on a team who need to win the fixture if they have any realistic hope of finishing the play-off places.

The Town couldn't be going into the fixture in finer fettle, having picked up nine points from a possible nine in their last three outings in the fourth tier.

Carlisle aren't in bad shape either, only being defeated once in their last 11 games. Their last two games have finished as draws.

THE GAFFER SAYS:

On his goalkeeper selection: "We did say at the beginning we were going to start with Marek, because we brought him in and then we signed Shea to challenge and to push him all the way – a fellow number one, rather than a number two.

"Marek's done so well that Shea's had to bide his time and he really has. He has played in the Checkatrade Trophy games, done fantastically well, because we didn't lose many of those games, so his win ratio is very good, we've been really happy with him.

"Now, Marek had a dip and then his wife had a baby. Sheasy came in and kept a clean sheet. We've only lost one in five since he's come back in, we've had four wins and one defeat. So I think it would be a little bit wrong for me to bring Marek back because we asked for that competition and if you compete, are doing well, you stay in, so I think it would go against the grain if I did that."

On any injuries ahead of the game and preparation: "It's pretty much a full squad to choose from. Scott Cuthbert's back in training, Lawson D'Ath is the only one that's not really going to be ready, so apart from that a full squad."

WHO?

The distance between Brunton Park and Kenilworth Road is a 550-mile round trip. Last season finished in similar heartbreak for the Hatters and the Cumbrians – with both reaching the League Two play-off semi-finals before conceding a last-minute goal that saw them crash out of the promotion chase.

Under ex-England international Keith Curle, Carlisle have got progressively better, finishing 20th, then tenth and finally sixth in his three seasons so far at the club. He is known for usually making themselves tough to beat at home, but so far this campaign his team have picked up three more points on the road than at home, and they currently sit 10th, four points off the play-offs.

WHEN AND WHERE?

Kick-off is at 3pm on Saturday 21st April at Brunton Park.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets for the game have now gone off sale at the Luton Town Ticket Office, but will be available at Carlisle at a £3 price increase on previously stated prices (apart from junior tickets). PLAYED BEFORE?

Carlisle visited the Kenny on a Tuesday night back in November, with the Hatters putting three past the Cumbrians without reply. Andrew Shinnie opened the scoring with an excellent curling effort, before Dan Potts headed in from an Alan Sheehan free-kick and Harry Cornick then calmly slotted home. Danny Hylton also missed a penalty. Our last visit to Brunton Park ended in a 0-0 draw back in March 2017. Of the 29 meetings between the two, Town have won 12, drawn 10 and been defeated seven times.
