Hatters unbeaten on 21st January in 53 years

January 21, 1961. Johnny Tillotson’s Poetry in Motion was at number one. And the Town also lost a football match for the last time on this day: a 2-1 defeat at Carrow Road against Norwich.

Fifty-three years and six matches later, against the likes of Wolves, Everton and QPR, and the Hatters have yet to taste a defeat on 21st January.

After a goalless draw at Charlton in ’78, the Town then went and won in the top flight at Molineux against Wolves in 1984. Garry Parker and Paul Walsh scored the Hatters goals.

Roy Wegerle’s sole strike earned a 1-0 win at Kenilworth Road against Everton five years later – still in the top flight.

After that victory over the Toffees in ’89 the Town went down the divisions and up again. Their next league fixture on 21st January came in the Championship in 2006. And goals from Finnish international defender Markus Heikkinen and striker Steve Howard sealed a 2-0 win at Kenilworth Road over Queens Park Rangers.

From the second tier down to the fifth in six years. The Hatters’ next match on 21st January came in the Conference. The Town’s topsy-turvy history would be summed up in this fixture before a crowd of 1,665 at Haig Avenue. 2-0 down, 3-2 up, drawn 3-3.
