Highly-rated midfielder Matt Robinson pens two-year deal

Talented central midfielder Matt Robinson has become Paul Buckle’s eighth new recruit ahead of the new season.

The 18-year-old impressed in a 45-minute appearance in Monday’s friendly victory over Hitchin and was unlucky not to score in the dying minutes when a low shot was saved by the Canaries' goalkeeper.

Leicester-born Robinson, who had been training with the Hatters over the course of pre-season and towards the back end of the previous campaign, has signed a two-year contract at Kenilworth Road.

Matt started his career as a youngster at his hometown club Leicester City, enjoying a productive spell for the Foxes’ Under-18s over the past two seasons. He scored five goals in 15 games as a first year scholar in 2010/11 before hitting nine goals in 28 games last term.

His release by the Walkers Stadium outfit ended an eight-year association with the club but, having impressed the Town coaching staff sufficiently over the past few months, his cameo at Top Field was enough for Paul Buckle to offer him a deal to stay with the Hatters until 2014.

On his latest capture Buckle told lutontown.co.uk: “He’s been with us a while now and he did really well at Hitchin, he’s a smashing kid and has got a great work ethic.

“He ticks all the boxes you want in an 18-year-old. He wants to play, he’s hungry, he listens and he wants to learn.

“He has a bright future and we’re delighted to have him. His mother is actually from Luton too which is a bit of bonus, but as I’ve said, what he’s shown us already gives myself and the coaching staff high hopes of developing a top footballer.”

Robinson has been handed squad number 23.

Hatters Player subscribers will be able to watch a full interview with Matt later today.
