Tomlinson nets another as the Hatters U18s hit back for a Posh point

4 September 2017

The Hatters youth team picked up another point from their EFL Youth Alliance South-East Division game against Peterborough United on Saturday, with Connor Tomlinson adding another goal to his growing collection at Ely Way.

The Town youngsters trailed to a first-half Posh strike, but academy & development manager Andy Awford was pleased with how the lads hit back after the break with Tomlinson – who had netted twice in the 8-1 midweek cup win over Barnet – bagging the equaliser.

Striker Tomlinson rounded off an incisive move down the right wing by Jake Peck and Jack James with another fine finish midway through the second period, before seeing a penalty saved shortly after as the Hatters spurned several chances to go on and win the match.

Awford told “In the first half we were OK, and that’s what I said to the lads at half-time; you’re doing enough, but we needed to be better in possession.

“We were 1-0 down to an individual error, as was the case early on in the previous game against Barnet, but we had plenty of the ball and just couldn’t do anything with it.

“In the second half we stepped it up and were the better side. We were in control of the game and managed to get the goal through another good two-touch finish from Connor.

“It was a good move down the right between Jake and Jack, and when the cut-back came Connor was there to tuck it away, just as he’d done against Barnet when Corey Panter had supplied him from the left.

“It was a good well-worked goal again, and we had chances to go on and win it, not least with the penalty. You never like missing penalties, but these things happen and we were comfortable in my opinion.

“The game before we score eight, and then we can’t quite get a second over the line in the next one. Of course, you’d prefer to take four against Barnet and four against Peterborough, but overall I was quite pleased with how well we played.”

TOWN: Parker, James, Mead ©, Panter, Byron, Read, Sorunke, Peck, Belgrove (Neufville), Richardson (Shamalo), Tomlinson. Subs not used: Swindells, A Jones, Ellis.

The Under-18s are next in action on Saturday morning - 9th September - when they travel to Gillingham’s training ground, along with the Under-16s, for an 11am kick-off.
