Following their 6-0 triumph the previous weekend, Alex Lawless’ side wasted no time against the U’s, leading 2-0 at the break.

On 17 minutes Benedict Benagr opened the scoring with a composed finish after fine link-up play down the left flank.

The lead was then doubled seven minutes before half-time when Tate Xavier-Jones found the target with a powerful drive after tricky play inside the box.

After the interval the hosts were denied by a series of smart saves from Hatters keeper Lucas Thomas but, after the Town wrestled possession back, it was 3-0 on the hour. Matthew Takawira chased down a back-pass was fouled by the Cambridge keeper and Xavier-Jones coolly dispatched the resultant penalty for his second of the game.

The U’s pulled one back on the counter-attack on 68 minutes but the Town youngsters made the game safe when Jack Lorentzen-Jones forced home at the near post – the team’s 10th goal in their opening two matches.
