Harry Cornick | "We just fell short tonight"

Harry Cornick was left wondering what could have been after Luton Town suffered only their third defeat on the road against Stoke City on Tuesday evening.

The forward – one of three changes to the starting line-up from the Blackpool win – was frustrated with the early goals conceded but was pleased by the fighting effort from the team, and the support from the 784 travelling away fans on a tricky night at the bet365 stadium.

“We’ve had some great chances but we gifted them two early goals,” Cornick admitted to the local press after the game. “It has ruined our game-plan, but we dug deep, we had a great result at the weekend, we’ve had five games in 11 games, we have another game Saturday and the boys have been working so hard.

"We fell short today which is no good but the fans were unbelievable again, cheering us on to the last minute. We had every chance but we just fell short tonight.

“When they went two-nil up we still thought that if we get the next goal then it’s game on. We just couldn’t quite get the ball in the net tonight and make a game of it. Two-nil doesn’t show the whole game, we had some great chances and I thought we dominated large periods of the game, we just lacked a bit in the final third and we gave them two early goals which cost us at the end of the night.”

On a personal note having now started in two of the last three matches as he returns to full fitness, the 27-year-old is raring to get going in front of goal and close the gap to Elijah Adebayo and Carlton Morris.

“It has been a horrible start to the season. I was injured in the first few weeks and then got injured again, I couldn’t quite get myself going. I’ve had three big shifts in a week so it has been good for me to get back out there, I just need to keep working hard and get going because I haven’t got my season going yet like I did last season.

“Once I get that first goal and then have a few good games it’ll be job done, then I can get going with Carlton and Eli because we have some talented players in this squad. We should be challenging this season we really believe that.”
