Luke Freeman spoke of his side’s disappointment at not being able to convert a good performance into three points against Birmingham City – but that there were only positive vibes to take from the opening day draw.
Debutant Freeman was at the heart of the Hatters’ impressive display, going close to opening his account for the season on two occasions before being replaced by Cauley Woodrow with just over 20 minutes to go.
Asked whether it was a feeling of frustration, the 30-year-old said: “I think so. The gaffer’s just touched on it there, we are probably a week or so just behind with regard to rustiness, but we all feel good.
“It’s natural as any footballer coming at this stage of the season, maybe you’re not one hundred per cent firing on all cylinders, but we’ve certainly showed what we are capable of doing so we’ll build on that, it’s definitely positive.”
At not being able to convert the chances created, attacking midfielder added: “It's just typical end of pre-season, start of season rustiness. You’ll watch the highlights and there’ll be loads of that on there from every team playing over the weekend.
“So yes, really happy with the performance. Unfortunately we didn’t get the three points but we are looking at it from a positive reflection rather than a negative.”
The front three that started the game – Freeman, fellow debutant Carlton Morris and last season’s top scorer Elijah Adebayo – were all replaced in the second half by the returning Woodrow, Harry Cornick and Cameron Jerome.
“You see any successful team in the Championship, you need to have a good squad,” said Freeman. “It’s a tough relentless year. You can’t keep churning out the same 11, 12 or 13 players every week.
“So it shows that the squad that we’ve got, there is some unbelievable talent that’s not even making the bench today. It’s what you need and we are looking forward to the rest of the season.”
And did he enjoy his first taste of competitive action as a Hatter at the Kenny?
“The adrenaline’s pumping, you’re at home with the home fans and I really enjoyed myself,” said Freeman. “I’m probably slightly a little bit off of fitness than the other lads as well, but I really enjoyed my time out there.”
