Junior reporter Zac Neal provided his take on the goalless draw against Birmingham City!

The first game of the EFL Championship 22/23 season for either side began at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters were seeking revenge after Birmingham City did the double against Luton Town last season scoring eight and conceding zero.

Luton started the better of the two teams. There was an early chance for debutant Luke Freeman who weaved his way through the Birmingham defence only to see his shot well saved by John Ruddy.

New signing Carlton Morris was also causing the Birmingham back line some problems as he impressed the Luton Town fans. Luton Town were definitely on top and dominating the opposition midfield. Some dangerous crosses were whipped in by James Bree and Jordan Clark among others but nothing really came.

Allan Campbell, Jordan Clark and Luke Freeman were causing havoc for the Birmingham midfield throughout the game. There was a touching moment in the thirty-fifth minute where both sets of supporters united and clapped for Mat Westwood.

Mat is a massive Luton Town fan and is battling cancer and this minute long applause was to commemorate his last match at Kenilworth Road.

The first half finished 0-0.

The second half started off more even. New goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was called into action a few times but never looked like making a mistake.

Carlton Morris probably had one of the best chances of the game when he was released down the right wing by Allan Campbell. He cut in from a tight angle and saw his flying shot go just wide. Birmingham didn’t have many chances but were holding on well.

Cauley Woodrow came close on his debut back at the club forcing John Ruddy to make a good save. This was about it for the game as it finished in a goalless 0-0 draw.

Nathan Jones and his men will be happy to end the Birmingham hoodoo after last season. It is also good to start off with a clean sheet, hopefully this continues!
