Dan Potts couldn’t believe his luck when the ball fell towards him in the area and knew all along there was only one place he was putting it!

The defender scored Luton Town’s first competitive goal of the 2022/23 campaign and put his side in front against Burnley before the home side found an equaliser in the second half.

But after the match, Potts shared an insight into the dressing room’s emotion, saying: “If you came into the dressing room you’d think we have just been smashed 4-0. There is a lot of disappointed faces but I think the way the game was in the end, we’d been under the cosh without them really creating that much but they had a lot of the ball. When we look back on Monday, I’m sure we will think that is a good point.

“It is a tough place to come,” Potts continued. “Not many of the lads have played here but you knew it was their first home game for them and the manager. I thought we dealt with it well early, obviously got the goal and then we knew what they were about from last week.

“Before the game the main thing was that we have nothing to fear. We go again, it’s another 11 players we’re playing against with a different shirt and that is what gave us the success last year, we didn’t really fear anyone. You always have to respect your opponents but there was an element of not having too much respect for them.

After opening his account for the season with a finish from close range, the defender admitted: “I just said to Cauley and Carlton, it’s a striker’s dream! It fell so nicely, my eyes lit up and there was only one place I was putting it. I thought we started the game really well, I thought the three lads in the middle of the park were all over them like a rash. We started on top, got set pieces and got throw-ins which is where the goal came from.

“That is the one problem though when you do go ahead early, the ball is in the other team’s court and it’s a case of ‘right what can you do to break us down’. I thought we handled it well first half and it was just a shame to concede early in the second.

“It doesn’t matter where you play on the pitch, it’s always nice to score and contribute to the team. We have goals everywhere so hopefully many more.”
