A look back at how Luton Town achieved a superb top-half finish in the Sky Bet Championship during a year like no other…

Similarly to the two months prior, November started with a victory, this time against Rotherham. Volleying home from Luke Berry’s free-kick, James Collins scored his fifth goal in all competitions to move the Hatters up to ninth in the table, at least temporarily.

What followed was a frustrating run of draws, all of which could have been three points on another day. George Moncur’s controlled volley was cancelled out by a second half Huddersfield Town goal, so to was Luke Berry’s strike against Blackburn Rovers later in the second period.

The succession of 1-1 results was concluded against Birmingham City, a result which left Nathan Jones saying: “We should have won the game. No doubt about it.”

A trip to Cardiff rounded of a so far unbeaten November, but Town were well beaten on the day in uncharacteristic fashion. Following two goals within the first 10 minutes, the home side added two more after half-time to hand Nathan Jones’ side their biggest defeat of the season, which the manager honestly admitted: “There has been two games in my life where I have been a little bit embarrassed and this is one of them.”

The next match to follow would be against table-toppers Norwich City which on paper would be a particularly hard challenge, though there would be one major difference this time around…
