Nahki Wells: "We probably should have won it"

New striker believes final friendly against Spurs sets Town up for Dons

Nahki Wells applauds the Kenilworth Road crowd as he walks out for the first time as a Luton Town player.

Nahki Wells felt yesterday’s final pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur was the perfect test for the Hatters going into Friday night’s League One opener against AFC Wimbledon.

After recording victories over Boreham Wood, NK Triglav Kranj, Colchester, Gillingham and Southend, Town controlled the goalless draw with the Europa League winners for long periods in front of a crowd of just under 11,000 at Kenilworth Road.

The recent signing following his departure from Bristol City spoke to LTFC+ after the game, and he said: “It was a tough game because they are very good opposition.

“I think it gives us real belief that we have played against a really good side and been able to deal with their threats. I know they are a bit premature in their pre-season and we are closer to the end, but we ran a really good side close today, and truthfully, probably should have won it.”

The 35-year-old forward had a couple of chances to open his account at the Kenny, and enjoyed a good battle with Spurs centre-backs Kevin Danso and Micky van de Ven.

On the game as a whole, and what the lads will have learnt from 90 minutes against such elite opposition, he said: “It gives us a different variation. We’ve played against sides where we’ve probably been in control, and now we’ve had that opportunity to be out of possession a bit more and had to be a bit more structured and resilient, and backs against the wall at times.

“But I think we dealt with and soaked up a lot of that pressure, and then we used it to try and go and hurt them. We had some good moments out there, and apart from winning the game, it’s a good way to end pre-season going into next Friday.”
