Today is our Unite for Access matchday, as we join clubs across the country in celebrating inclusion – just as Port Vale did when we visited the Potteries last week.

The campaign continues to grow each year, and it’s an important reminder that football is at its best when everyone can take part, feel welcome, and enjoy the game in a way that works for them.

This year’s theme focuses on how disability can shape and transform the matchday experience. Level Playing Field have produced a powerful film in which supporters share their personal stories, reflecting both the challenges they face and the joy they still find in following their clubs. The film – available in accessible formats – can be found on their website: www.levelplayingfield.org.uk.

As part of today’s activity, LTFC+ and our in‑ground Audio Descriptive Commentary will feature Simon Pitts, joined by his former Diverse FM colleague and LTDSA committee member, Steve Moore. Today’s broadcast gives Steve the opportunity to share his own lived experience as part of the wider conversation.

Steve brings a particularly meaningful perspective to this year’s theme. His cerebral palsy has changed his mobility needs over time, which means his entire matchday routine has had to evolve.

In his youth, during his Diverse FM days, and even until fairly recently, he needed no additional support at games. Now, he has to consider every aspect of the matchday experience – not just for himself, but also for those around him. That includes knowing support is available if he experiences mobility difficulties, choosing the most suitable entrance and seating area, and accepting that he now has to sit far more than he used to.

Where he once stood in the Main Stand Upper, Block D or E, he’s now more often found in the Bobbers Stand, Blocks C or E, complete with his away‑kit blue walking stick. And instead of turning up with his mates five pints deep, he’s more likely to be accompanied by his wife or mother in a carer capacity. The routine may have changed, but the passion certainly hasn’t.

Despite these adjustments, Steve’s enjoyment of matchday remains as strong as ever – certainly stronger than his tolerance for a bad result. His commitment to supporting both the town and the club is unwavering, whether through his work as a local councillor for Sundon Park or as a dedicated LTDSA committee member.

If you’re interested in joining the LTDSA, becoming a member, joining the committee to help out like Steve does, or simply finding out more, visit our website: https://www.ltdsa.co.uk/

You can also RSVP to the AGM at the end of April, with more details to follow later in March.
