Premier League Cup action was back at the Kenny for the second time this season and after defeat in the opening two games to Exeter and Brentford, the Town were hoping to pick up our first points in the group stage.

Unfortunately the Baggies youngsters proved too strong for a Hatters side featuring regular first team faces Jacob Brown, Lasse Nordas and Joe Gbodé, as well as Reuell Walters who made his first appearance since Peterborough away, as four second-half goals gave the final scoreline a comprehensive look after Brown had cancelled out Deago Nelson's opener for West Brom before half-time.

West Brom had the first attempt of the evening in the opening minutes through Miller McDonald, whose attempt was drilled low and well saved by Lucas Thomas in the Town goal.

Luton would come close shortly after with Walters winning a free-kick on the right towards the corner flag. Harry Fox crossed with his left foot to the back post, where trialist Bonaventura Pagano’s header went wide.

Both teams had limited chances in the opening period, but the Midlands club took the lead through right-back Nelson in the 20th minute. After their attackers won a couple of headers out wide on the left, Souleyman Mandey played the ball across the edge of the box to Nelson, whose low attempt from the right-hand side found the bottom left corner.

McDonald had another chance for Albion soon after, then a great tackle from Jack Lorentzen-Jones allowed him to dribble past his man, before playing a through ball left to Gbodé, who had his attempt collected by the keeper.

The away side came close with back-to-back chances on the half-hour, with both Noah DuPont and Torin Ntege having attempts saved low by Luton stopper Thomas.

Fox would go on to play a lofted ball over the top to Nordas, whose flick on fell to Charlie Trustram, with his attempt being saved high by keeper Joe Wallis.

Ntege had another chance caught by Thomas, and the keeper threw a quick ball out to the left to Gbodé. After a driving run from the winger, his looping cross towards the back post found Brown, whose rising header found the back of the net in the 39th minute.

Alex Lawless made a change at half-time as Walters left the field to be replaced by Alvin Isufi, the former Arsenal defender having completed his first 45 minutes in more than three months.

A short stoppage of play came in the 50th minute with Pagano going down, as the Town created the first chance of the half, with Lorentzen-Jones' effort being tipped over by Wallis.

Play down the left from the away side saw a deflected effort by Ntege strike the post.

The Hatters cleared the resulting corner, however a second phase of play saw the ball played to the back stick and headed towards goal by Michael Parker. Despite getting fingertips to the ball Thomas could not deal with the attempt as West Brom regained the lead.

The Baggies came close to a third in the 59th minute with Nelson having another low attempt at Thomas, the Town stopper got his glove to the shot before being cleared by Ioannides.

In the 61st minute, captain for the night Brown was replaced by Jamie Odegah and soon Thomas thought he had kept the Hatters in the game, as a ball was dipped in from DuPont to Ntege, whose effort deflected over the bar.

Despite the save and two resulting corners on from the attempt, the visitors would go on to add a third goal, DuPont drilling a low attempt from close range past the keeper on 67 minutes.

Thomas came to the rescue yet again, making himself big after an easy run from the West Brom striker, saw the keeper collect from his feet.

Moments later Gbodé had an attempt cleared off the line from a corner by Nelson, before a second cross entered the box in which Nordas struggled to find. Trustram had an attempt from distance in the 77th minute after a throw-in from the visitors was poorly executed, as the attacking midfielder's shot flew slightly over the bar.

The fourth official indicated five minutes of added time, and the visitors soon added a fourth through substitute Charlie Blackshield, who finished from the edge of the box without difficulty.

West Brom made it five in the fifth minute of added time through another substitute, this time Jaiden Francis-Caeser, as Town suffering a third straight defeat in the competition was complete.
