The Hatters were beaten at home by League Two Newport County in a cracking game at Kenilworth Road.

The game started well for Nathan Jones’ side. Admiral Muskwe came close after the ball deflected his way but his shot was saved by Joe Day.

Luke Berry also had an effort saved by the County goalkeeper. Louie Watson went very close as well, his shot curled just wide of the post. The game opened up thanks to a moment of magic from our Spaniard Carlos Mendes Gomes. He received the ball from Reece Burke near the centre circle and ran towards the Oak Road End.

He then smashed it into top corner from 30 yards out to give the Hatters the lead! This was a big moment for Mendes Gomes as it was his first goal at Kenilworth Road since joining in 2021. This didn’t last too long as Newport struck back soon after.

There was some great work from the Newport County midfield to get the ball to Lewis Collins in the box and his shot went past Matt Macey to level things up. The first half finished 1-1.

Luton started the second half very well. Tom Lockyer put the Hatters back ahead. After some great work with Dion Pereira, Tom Lockyer got the ball from a tight angle on the left-hand side of the six-yard box and his clever shot rebounded off the post into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.

Again, this was short lived. Newport equalised for a second time after Sam Bowen played the ball to Chanka Zimba who slotted the ball past Matt Macey from inside the box. Nathan Jones made some changes after this goal bringing on some fresh legs. Newport took the lead fifteen minutes before the end of the game thanks to James Waite.

Chanka Zimba had a shot saved byMacey but the rebound fell to Waite who smashed it in to give Newport the lead. Luton were pressing for an equaliser but nothing came and Newport County advanced.

A disappointing result for the Hatters but we move on to Saturday’s game against Preston North End.
