Elijah Adebayo was pleased to open his goal account for Luton Town but was disappointed it didn’t result in a win for the Hatters against Millwall last night.

The Deadline Day addition slotted the ball past Bartosz Bialkowski in the 55th minute and for a lengthy period it had looked to be the winning goal, but for the Lions’ late leveller.

Nevertheless, Adebayo said: “It was good to get a goal, especially for myself as a striker. It was heading towards a good night, but we just had a little lapse in concentration at the end which cost us the game.

“We fought, we were diligent, we tried to nullify what we knew they were going to come with and then we just have to concentrate for 96 minutes of the game.”

Adebayo was awarded his first start and made an instant impact, but in hindsight reflected: “I think if I connected with it properly the keeper probably saves it, but I’ll take it!

“It was a positive for me, I was saying to myself if I get one chance, I’m going to take it and obviously it came.

“I got another chance and unfortunately that one didn’t go in for me, but I’ll keep my head high and when I get my chance next time again, I’ll put that right and work hard on the training pitch to make sure those are my bread and butter. Delighted with the goal, ready for Saturday now.”

The 23-year-old praised Mick Harford for his assistance since arriving at the club, adding: “Since the first day I have come in, Mick has been talking to me every day. Talking about my game, helping me with little things.

“I think the main thing we wanted to work on was headed goals because Mike was a good header of the ball, so we spoke about that and he said when you get in those positions, make sure you’re heading it down.

“He has been saying to me, keep it simple, work hard but you will get your chance and when you do, just take your opportunity. Fortunately, today I did but we just didn’t get the three points.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday, Adebayo is hoping to remain in contention and continue to prove his worth to the team.

“It is a massive game, like every other game this season. It is massive, we know that we need to get points as well as the performance being good.

“We know if we perform well, we will definitely create chances to get goals so it is about moving on, and everyone being ready for the next game because the games are coming thick and fast. We are going to need everyone in the squad to reach our goal.”
