Benson hoping for turn in fortune ahead of Cobblers clash

Striker Paul Benson says the team owe the Town faithful a performance when they take on Northampton at Sixfields on Saturday.

The Hatters head up the M1 with their place in the Play-Offs in jeopardy following a run of seven defeats in eight matches in League 2.

And after their latest set-back on Tuesday against Wycombe, an honest Benson demanded the Town arrest their slump in form sooner rather than later.

“We’ve got to just turn it around, we’ve got to win on Saturday,” said the 34-year-old, who made his first start for the Hatters since breaking his leg four months ago.

“We’ve got to go there and defend better than we have done and try and win the game. We’ve got to try and turn this horrendous run of form around.

“We owe it to a lot of people to start winning games of football and putting in performances. A lot of supporters come and watch us…we’re letting them down at the moment.”

Despite the Town’s poor run of results they still remain well positioned to seal a Play-Off place, but Benson hopes the Hatters’ season doesn’t tail off as the campaign reaches its climax.

“Sometimes it’s easy to forget how well we’ve done this season and it would be such a shame to throw it all away in the final month,” said Benson.

“It’s really disappointing because I know how hard the boys and staff have worked this season, and how much effort and time the fans have put in to watch and support us.

“We owe it to ourselves and to everyone else associated with this club that we turn this run of form around and start winning games again.”
