Trialist Craig Mackail-Smith netted a second-half equaliser as the Town earned a 1-1 draw at Boreham Wood.

The former Brighton forward finished with aplomb with 15 minutes left on the clock to cancel out Junior Morais’ earlier strike for Wood.

Manager John Still used 21 players on the night, making nine changes at half-time against Conference newboys Boreham Wood.

The Town almost fell behind in the opening minutes of the friendly when Mark O’Brien’s intended back-pass to Elliot Justham was intercepted by Harry Crawford, but the Hatters keeper did well to block the shot and Ricky Shakes’ follow-up.

New signing Paddy McCourt had already wowed a number of the Town fans in the crowd with a number of silky touches and he came close to giving the Hatters the lead when he danced around four players and dinked a shot goalwards that was cleared off the line.

Josh McQuoid saw a shot deflected over the crossbar shortly before half-time as the Town pushed for the opening goal.

But the Hatters fell behind moments into the second period when a deflection off Stephen O’Donnell landed at the feet of Morais and he tucked a tidy finish beyond Justham.

Going behind forced the Town forward and the urgency resulted in a number of chances as the second period wore on.

Scott Griffiths was crowded out by the Wood defence when well-placed in the penalty area before an O’Donnell cross was met first-time by Mustafa Tirkayi but his shot was held by the Boreham Wood keeper.

The Town continued to press in search of an equaliser and, after Isaac Galliford’s thumping goal-bound effort was blocked bravely in the penalty area, Mackail-Smith levelled matters with a cool finish with 15 minutes left to play when racing clear of the home defence.

Both sides went for a winner in the closing stages, but the nearest either came to finding one came with the last action when Matthew Whichelow’s free-kick came back off the wall after Justham had handled outside the penalty area.

First half: Justham, Potts, McNulty, Trotman, O'Brien Doyle, McGeehan, Green, McCourt, McQuoid, Tiryaki.

Second half: Justham, O'Donnell, Wilkinson, Griffiths, Williams, Lawless, Smith, Guttridge, Galliford, Tiryaki (sub Banton 75), Mackail-Smith.
