James Bree made his stay permanent at Kenilworth Road in 2021 after signing initially on loan from Premier League Aston Villa for the 2019-20 season.
The now 24-year-old had made almost 150 career appearances by the start of the 2020-21 campaign since making his debut for Barnsley at just 16.
After making 61 appearances for the Tykes, he joined the Villa Park outfit in the January transfer window of the 2016/17 campaign, but struggled to pin down a regular place in their starting line-up, joining Ipswich Town on loan for the second half of the 2018-19 season.
Most comfortable at right-back, Bree played several times at left-back for the Hatters in a first season that saw him make 42 appearances for the club.
He returned on a permanent deal on 1st September 2020 after securing his exit from Premier League Villa.
Injury somewhat hindered his minutes on the pitch but in March 2021, Bree scored his first senior goal during the 2-0 win against Coventry City. The defender made 27 appearances in all competitions.
In 2021/22, Bree was a regular fixture in the Town defence and chipped in with seven goal contributions in 45 matches, including a delightful free-kick in the 3-1 victory against Hull City.
