Luke Berry wrote himself into Luton Town history with the last-minute equaliser against Nottingham Forest at Kenilworth Road, then described it in typical down-to-earth style as: “Just one of those things!”
The 31-year-old midfielder became the first man to score in all four of English football’s top divisions in a Hatters shirt with his maiden Premier League strike in the 1-1 draw.
Asked what his feelings were when he swivelled and volleyed home Reece Burke’s knock-down from a Ross Barkley corner, Berry replied: “Just, ‘Yeah, it’s brilliant, come on!’
“I don’t know, I just want to score and help the team really, that’s the main thing. I’m not too fussed really about scoring in the Premier League. It’s just one of those things.”
Berry’s goal on his 150th league appearance for the Town was his 25th in a Town shirt, from a total of 176 appearances in all competitions over six-and-a-half years.
He is one of two players in the Town squad, along with skipper Tom Lockyer, to have netted in all five of the top divisions having also found the target in the Conference on many occasions for Cambridge United.
The midfielder can also include goals at Step 5 of the Non-League Pyramid on his CV, having played for Cambridge’s development side, Cambridge Regional College, in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division.
“The main thing was just getting the point and making sure we stayed in touch with them,” said Berry of the result that keeps Town within a victory of Forest. “If we’d lost today it would have been six points and now we can go into the international break, regroup and kick on."
He added: “Everyone knows you can’t be losing, it’s a six-pointer really, and thankfully although we didn’t get the win, at least we didn’t lose.”
