CARBAO CUP MATCH PREVIEW | CARDIFF CITY V LUTON TOWN

27 August 2019

Sponsored by

The Hatters will look to put right their defeat to Cardiff City from just over a fortnight ago as they take on the Bluebirds this evening in the Carabao Cup second round in South Wales.

A last minute Isaac Vassell goal saw the Town lose 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium in Championship action, but Graeme Jones sees tonight’s game as the perfect opportunity to see if his side have learned from their mistakes.

Town reached this stage of the competition after defeating Ipswich Town 3-1 at Kenilworth Road, whilst Neil Warnock’s side were already guaranteed a place in this stage of the competition, having just come down from the Premier League.

Jones’ team will be buoyed by their first league victory of the campaign, as they defeated Barnsley 3-1 at Oakwell on Saturday. The Bluebirds on the other hand have tasted victory in just one of their three games since they played us, most recently drawing with Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

With tonight’s game a Carabao Cup tie, it will not be available to stream for international subscribers, however, Simon Pitts’ full match commentary will be available to iFollow Hatters subscribers.

GRAEME JONES SAID:

Due to yesterday being a bank holiday, a press conference wasn’t held, with Graeme’s thoughts on Cardiff available from Saturday’s post match interview at Barnsley, which you can watch for free by clicking play on the video below.

WHO?

Celebrating 120 years since their formation in 1899, the Bluebirds made a surprise return to the Premier League under Neil Warnock in the 2017/18 campaign, before immediately heading back down to the Championship. Having played in the second tier for 14 out of the last 16 seasons prior to this campaign, Cardiff will be hoping to find their way back into the top tier at the first attempt, having also previously played there in the 2013/14 season. A club with a fantastic history, they are the only club outside of England to lift the FA Cup, as well as more recently reaching the final of that competition in 2008, as well as the League Cup final in 2012.

WHEN AND WHERE?

Kick-off is at 7.45pm at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday 27th August.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE?

Tony Harrington will be in charge of this evening’s game, having overseen four matches so far this campaign, dishing out nine yellow cards and no red cards.

PLAYED BEFORE?

Town last took on the Bluebirds just over two weeks ago, with Matty Pearson’s towering header bringing things level late on after Aden Flint opened the scoring, before former Hatter Isaac Vassell scored the winner in the last minute of injury time. In total, the two have faced each other 68 times, with the Hatters winning on 26 occasions, drawing 18 and losing 24.
