CHECKATRADE TROPHY MATCH PREVIEW | PETERBOROUGH UNITED V LUTON TOWN

13 November 2018

Sponsored by

Town take on Peterborough United this evening in their final group stage game of this campaign's Checkatrade Trophy, having already qualified for the knockout stages.

Wins over Brighton & Hove Albion Under-21s and Milton Keynes means the Hatters will finish top of the group, regardless of what happens this evening.

All three teams below the Hatters – including Posh – are tied on two points, with Steve Evans' side having the better goal difference, knowing a win or a penalty shootout victory tonight is the only way his team can progress.

THE GAFFER SAYS:

On taking the game seriously, regardless of the fact the Hatters are already through: "It will make absolutely no difference what the circumstances are, we will take it on in exactly the same way because it's game that we can test ourselves against Peterborough and some of them need game time.

"We have always taken the competition seriously, even when we were sanctioned, we took it seriously, it's just us taking it seriously didn't coincide with some rules that we were apparently breaking. Now it's a lot more sensible and better and there will be no taking it lightly from us or relaxing and thinking we're through.

"Yes, the pressure is off us not to have to win the game, because it wont make a hell of a lot of a difference to the table whatever happens, but we know we have to be respectful to the other two teams in the group. We are Luton, and we prepare in the same way."

On facing Posh: "I can't second guess what Peterborough are going to do. Peterborough are in a good place in the league, they are through to the second round of the FA Cup, as are we. They might have different aspirations for it.

"I don't listen to many interviews, but I happened to be in the room when Steve Evans was interviewed before the last game, so I know that he was taking the last game seriously to set up this game as a potential group winning tie.

"That hasn't been the case, but I am sure he wants to win the game as do we, so I am expecting a very tough tie, as you would against any Steve Evans team."

WHO?

Currently sat in third in Sky Bet League One, Posh have drawn both of their group stage games, losing both of their penalty shootouts. Peterborough have named strong teams in those games, so no doubt Steve Evans will continue in that way as his team look to secure their place in the next round of the competition.

WHEN AND WHERE?

Kick-off is at 7.45pm at the ABAX Stadium on Tuesday 13th November.

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets for this game will be available on the night. Prices are: Adults: £5, Concessions: £1.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE?

Tonight's match will be refereed by Andy Woolmer, who oversaw our 2-0 victory over Walsall. In total, he has dished out 21 yellow cards and three red cards in six games this season.

PLAYED BEFORE?

This is the second time the Hatters have faced Peterborough in the Checkatrade Trophy, having played them in January in the second knockout phase of last season's competition. A Posh side that included former Hatter and now Derby forward Jack Marriott defeated the Town on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes. In total the teams have faced each other 27 times, the Hatters winning nine, drawing 12 and losing six.
