King has made four appearances for the Town first team

Craig King has become the second young Hatters goalkeeper to make a loan move today to gain further experience at senior level.

After Liam Gooch joined Step 3 club Kettering Town, 20-year-old King has now linked up with Vanarama National League side Southport on an initial one-month deal ahead of their trip to Maidstone United tomorrow.

The move marks a third loan for King, who spent the first half of last season in the Ryman Premier Division with Met Police before a stint at National League South outfit Bishop’s Stortford.

This term he has made his senior debut for the Town, making four starts in total during the club’s run to the semi-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy, while acting as back-up to England Under-21 keeper Christian Walton in Sky Bet League Two during the first half of the season.

Hatters boss Nathan Jones said: “This is the next step up for Craig at an excellent standard of football, just one league below us. We rate him highly at our club and spending time at Southport will really aid his development.”

We all wish Craig well during his spell with the Sandgrounders!
