The Town Under-18s made it back-to-back wins in the Merit League as a second-half winner from leading goalscorer Freddie Hinds earned a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham.

After last weekend’s triumph over Gillingham, boss Paul Driver included four Under-16s in the side with Monday’s development squad game in mind.

And the Hatters youngsters collected another three points and another clean sheet thanks to Hinds who raced clear of the Robins defence with 22 minutes left to slot home the winner – his 20th goal of the season.

A delighted Driver told lutontown.co.uk: “It was a different kind of challenge to what the boys have faced this season, Cheltenham were a very robust side to play against.

“We played well – it was Liam Gooch’s 21st clean sheet of the season – and some of the football in the first half was very good.

“Cheltenham made it tough for us and the young boys especially will learn from this.

“We defended well and had plenty of shots – the only issue was we couldn’t turn these chances into goals.

“That aspect of the game – finishing in the final third – is something the boys need to improve on. It’s just a case of working their goalkeeper a bit more.”

Town: Gooch, Mead (sub McJannet 59), James, Bean, Jones, Cotter, Brown, Verney, Murray, Read, Hinds.

Subs not used: McGhan-George, Atkinson, Snelus, Ellis.
