Luton Town will host Sky Bet Championship giants Aston Villa in Round One of the EFL Cup after the draw took place live on Facebook this lunchtime.
Ray Wilkins, the former England international who began last season as assistant-manager at the then-Premier League club under Tim Sherwood, pulled Villa’s name out of the hat after the Hatters were pre-drawn at home as a non-seeded club.
With Newcastle United and Norwich City absent from the draw until Round Two due to them finishing above Villa in the top-flight relegation places last term, the Midlands club are the highest ranked team in this season’s competition opening round.
They will be under the charge of new manager Roberto Di Matteo, the 46-year-old Italian who led Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup success as recently as 2012.
The match will take place in the week commencing August 8, with date, kick-off time and ticket prices to be confirmed as soon as possible.
