1-1 draw makes it 19 without defeat for youngsters

The Town Under-18s fought back to earn a point at Gillingham to stretch their unbeaten run this season to 19 games.

Paul Driver’s side had a goal six minutes from time from midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson to thank to cancel out Gillingham’s first-half goal.

The Gills took the lead three minutes before the break in a first half that the hosts dominated.

However the Town did rattle the woodwork in the opening 45 minutes when Bakinson struck the bar with a shot from inside the area.

Behind at the interval the Hatters upped the ante in the second half. James Verney and George Murray were denied by the Gills keeper while Kyran McGhan-George hit the bar.

But just when it seemed the Town’s unbeaten run end would come to an end, Bakinson fired home the leveller on 84 minutes after the home side failed to clear their lines from a Hatters set-piece.

Under-18s boss Paul Driver told lutontown.co.uk: “We played poorly first half but in the second we were absolutely tremendous.

“Even had we not got a point I still would have been chuffed.

“Both sides did well against a strong wind but we battled well, the character of the boys has shone through yet again.”

The Town extended their lead at the top of the table to another point following Southend's defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

Town: Jones, Bean (sub Hinds 81), McJannet, Musonda, Famewo, McGhan-George, Justin, Cotter, Atkinson, Bakinson, Verney (sub Murray 68).

Subs not used: Gooch, Brown, Snelus.
