Midfielder eyeing eyeing regular place after Daggers strike

Alex Lawless hopes his goal at Dagenham & Redbridge on Sunday can help him cement a regular spot in the Town side.

The 30-year-old was given his first League 2 start of the season at Victoria Road and capped his 180th appearance in Luton colours with a crucial second goal in the 2-0 win.

“That start was a long time coming,” Lawless said after the victory. “I was chuffed to bits to be playing and the bonus of a goal is great because I want to play more.

“Hopefully I can be in the team more regularly and score more goals. It’s always nice to score, especially away from home at the end where our fans were. It’s another moment of my career that I will remember.”

The result, the Town’s first win in four games, hoisted the Hatters from 18th up to 13th in the League 2 table and to within six points of an automatic promotion place.

“The main thing was winning. We came to win, we worked hard, it’s three points and a clean sheet,” said Lawless. “It’s put us in the direction where we want to go and now we’ve got to use this result in the next few weeks.

“Somebody said afterwards how close we are now to the top half off the table and stuff like that is encouraging.

“We won’t be looking too far ahead but we know how quickly things can change with a few good results in this league.”
