Hatters 200/1 to win promotion with Sky Bet

Those of you who once played Championship Manager and needed a positive last-day-of-the-season result to ensure success will remember those extricating moments. And if it didn’t go to plan, in a fit of frustration, you could always turn the game off without saving it. Or, worse, manage the opposition and play all their men up front. Or something to that effect.

On Saturday the Hatters face one of those beyond-their-control instances. Three points, plenty of goals and the hope that Shrewsbury can do the same against Plymouth is all the Town can ask for if they’re to make a last-minute leap into the final Play-Off spot at the Pilgrims’ expense.

Unfortunately, though, this is real life, and unfortunately nobody will be able to wrestle control of Graham Westley and order all of his players to stand up-field to allow the Hatters the freedom of the Stevenage goalmouth.

Those of you reading this that cheated their way to the top-flight in CM might not realise this, but believe it or not it’s not completely out of the realms of possibility. Take for instance, that 441 days ago the Hatters beat Hereford United 7-0 – the very same day that Plymouth Argyle lost 4-0 to York City. And if that can happen…on the same day once…then…

The fact somebody took the time to look back that far shows how sad desperate they are to see the Town gatecrash the top seven.

For the Hatters to make the Play-Offs they will need to win at least 2-0, and hope Shrewsbury beat Plymouth 6-0. The eight-goal swing must be made up.

Our friends at Sky Bet reckon that 2-0/6-0 combination is a 1,808/1 chance. Yes, place £1 on that correct score double, see it roll in and go and collect the best part of £2,000.

And there are plenty more calculations to play around with if you’re feeling particularly confident about the weekend. Luton 5-0 and Shrewsbury 3-0? That’s 971/1. Two four-nillers? 1,188/1.

Given the Town’s luck this season, however, you wouldn’t be surprised to see a comprehensive home win over Boro…but then investigate social media to find out that Plymouth have indeed eked a draw at Shrewsbury anyway.

Stranger things have happened in football, and this is Luton Town FC – a club who never do things the easy way (except winning the Conference title last year, granted). The great escapes of 1983, 1990 and 1991 spring to mind. Has there’s ever been a last-day doomsday scenario that the other end of the table for the Town?

Never say never…

In the spirit of making a case to back the Hatters this weekend, while not put your pound on an early goal – you know, one sprightly opener inside the first 10 minutes to get Kenilworth Road believing that the impossible is possible? It’s 3/1 with SkyBet that the onion bag will be breached in those opening moments.

Recommendation:

First goal to be scored in the first 10 minutes: 3/1.

*The Hatters are also 200/1 to win promotion and 66/1 to make the Play-Offs.
