Former Pompey boss installed as new academy chief

The Hatters are delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Awford as Youth Academy and Development Manager.

Andy’s most recent job was as first team manager of Portsmouth – a club where he made over 300 appearances for as a player.

However, the 42-year-old has a wealth of experience in nurturing and managing young players, having headed-up the Pompey academy for three years prior to being installed manager at Fratton Park.

Andy was also chief scout and reserve team boss while with Pompey and worked at Oxford United under Jim Smith as assistant manager, but arrives at Kenilworth Road three months after he masterminded a 2-0 win for Portsmouth over the Hatters in League 2.

On the appointment of Awford, who replaces Wayne Turner, who departed at the end of last season, chief executive Gary Sweet told lutontown.co.uk: “We are privileged to have somebody of Andy’s credentials at our club at this particular level and at this time.

“Now that we are back as a fully-fledged Football League club, Andy will be responsible for managing our EPPP3 status. We won’t be expecting that status just to be consolidated, but for it also to be progressed under his stewardship.

“We see Andy as the prefect man to help us achieve this, but he will also be tasked with helping young professionals develop following their transition from the youth team.

“On behalf of everyone at Kenilworth Road I’d like to welcome Andy to Luton Town, and look forward to seeing the results that his experience and expertise is sure to bring.”

A full interview with Andy, and manager John Still, on his appointment, will follow on Monday.
