Defender's delight at reunion with former boss

New Town signing Magnus Okuonghae has revealed to Hatters Player that he was contemplating a move to another club when he got the “come and get me” call from John Still.

The centre-half has played under Still before when the pair were at Dagenham, and Okuonghae says being reunited with his old manager was also a major reason why he put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Kenilworth Road.

Magnus exclusively told Player: “I had other offers but as soon as the gaffer phoned it was a no brainer. I’m delighted.

“It was actually sat in the car park of another club and thinking about signing for them when I got the call I wanted [from John Still]. It was brilliant – I turned on the engine and drove out!

“John gets teams winning and I want to be a part of that and I think we have a very good chance of being promoted this season.”

On his latest capture, who has already been training with the Town this week, the boss said: “He’s a beast, a big, strong, powerful player and a great lad.

“The crowd will love him, he always plays with a big grin on his face and but you wouldn’t want to fight him!

“Magnus make us strong in defence. Last season when we lost two centre-halves that gave us a problem, but we’ve brought in good competition.

“If somebody doesn’t play it won’t make us weaker – in fact it might even make us stronger. And that’s what we wanted.

“He’s only 29, too. The best years of his career are still in front of him. I really am pleased.”
