Victory makes it 18 wins from 21 in all competitions

The Town Under-18s surged eight points clear at the top of the Youth Alliance as a 3-0 win over Cambridge at Kenilworth Road extended their unbeaten run this season to 21 games.

After a tight early opening the Hatters took the lead in the 20th minute when James Verney raced through one-on-one with the Cambridge keeper and coolly slotted home his eighth goal of the season.

In front, Paul Driver’s side doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Akin Famewo smashed home in the penalty area after the visitors failed to clear a Town corner.

It could have been 3-0 before the break with Kavan Cotter denied by a block and George Murray kept-out by a fine save from the Cambridge goalkeeper.

After the interval it took the young Hatters until just after the hour mark to make victory safe when Murray stabbed home his 10th goal of the season from close range.

With Southend’s game postponed the Town’s advantage at the top is now eight points.

The victory was the Hatters’ 18th in 21 matches this season. It was also a 13th clean sheet of the campaign, too.

Town: Gooch, Bean (sub Justin 84), McJannet, McGhan-George, Famewo, Brown (sub Justin 69), Cotter, Bakinson, Snelus, Murray (Shamola 82), Verney.

Sub not used: Hinds.
