Midfielder in contention after overcoming knee problem

The Town are set to welcome back Jonathan Smith to the squad for the Boxing Day game with Wycombe Wanderers at Kenilworth Road.

The 29-year-old, who scored against Wanderers on Boxing Day last year, missed last weekend’s dramatic victory at Exeter with a knee injury but caretaker manager Andy Awford expects the midfielder to return for the match with the Chairboys.

“He’s trained all week, he’s fit and available for selection,” Awford told lutontown.co.uk.

However the Hatters are set to be without the services of centre-half Luke Wilkinson, who also missed last Saturday’s triumph.

“He’s not far away but he hasn’t trained and he won’t be involved,” added Awford.

The Town have no fresh injury worries ahead of Saturday’s game with Dan Potts, Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, Nathan Doyle and Paddy McCourt all back in training this week.

But the quartet are unlikely to be thrown into the Hatters squad just yet.

“They’ve all trained,” said Awford. “It’s been a good week for them, they’ve joined in and been involved. They won’t be available for selection for Saturday, and probably not for Portsmouth but if we manage them well enough they could be in contention for Bristol Rovers.”
