Four-goal opening day win for Town youngsters

The Hatters’ Under-18s began their season in the Youth Alliance with a bang by beating Barnet 4-0 at Ely Way on Saturday morning.

Paul Driver’s youngsters, who were beaten 5-0 by the Bees last term, were 1-0 to the good at half-time thanks to Geo Craig’s strike. The forward finished in the penalty area after Frankie Musonda had nodded down James Justin’s free-kick in the 37th minute.

The second half was only five minutes old when the Town doubled their lead when Jack Snelus looped home a 35-yard effort.

Brimming with the confidence of a two-goal advantage, the Hatters made it 3-0 on 72 minutes when substitute Freddie Hinds headed home from close range.

And with four minutes left the scoring was completed when another sub, James Verney, also nodded home from inside the six-yard box.

A happy Driver told lutontown.co.uk: “There’s no getting away from what a fantastic result it is but it’s important to keep the boys’ feet on the ground. It was only the first game.

“There is definitely room for improvement in our overall play and we can, and will, get better.

“The boys played some good football, especially in the second half, and this kind of performance bodes well for the rest of the campaign.”

Town: Gooch, Bean, McJannett, McGhan-George, Justin, Atkinson (sub Hinds 71), Cotter, Snelus, Craig (sub Verney 67), Murray (sub Famewo 88).

Subs not used: Jones, Lee.
