Hatters youngsters triumph but just miss out on title

The Town Under-18s ended their season as Merit League Division 1 runners-up after a 2-0 win over Stevenage on Saturday morning.

Second half goals from Alex Atkinson and Frankie Musonda gave Paul Driver’s side their sixth win in eight games, but Plymouth’s win over Swindon meant the Pilgrims lifted the title.

However, the Hatters youngsters can be proud of their efforts this term – especially given the youthfulness of the side in recent months.

Atkinson’s close range finish put the Town ahead five minutes after half-time before Musonda nodded home from a free-kick at the back-post 15 minutes later.

“It was a really good game, a proper game of football,” Driver said. “It had plenty of niggle and bite and it’s one of those matches which I think both sets of players will learn from.

“To finish runners-up is an excellent achievement, especially with such a young team. All I hope is that the young ones we have blooded this season will go on and do well next year.”

Town U18: Gooch, Trotman, McJannet (sub Cotter 74), Musonda, Fanewo, Juston, Bakinson (sub Snelus), Atkinson, Galliford, Craig, Verney (sub Amu 68). Subs not used: Bean, Murray.
