Whalley treble inspires Town dev squad to win title
The Town development squad clinched the Southern divisional title of the Final Third Development League with a 6-1 win over Gillingham on Tuesday afternoon.
A strong side were three goals to the good at half-time and added another three after the break to seal the title with one game left to play.
Shaun Whalley netted a hat-trick, with his first two goals giving the Hatters a 2-0 advantage before Ricky Miller made it 3-0.
Alex Lacey headed home a corner to make it 4-0 in the second half before Whalley completed his hat-trick to put the Town 5-0 in front.
Gillingham got one back but the Hatters made it six when Lacey headed home from another set-piece to seal a very comfortable victory.
Town first team coach Hakan Hayrettin told lutontown.co.uk: “The attitude was spot on, just like it has been in this competition all season.
“We take all of these games very seriously and the boys did so again and their hard work paid off with an excellent performance.”
