Justham save helps Town progress in Beds Senior CupA Hatters development squad booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Beds Senior Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Dunstable Town on Tuesday night.
The game itself ended 1-1 with the Hatters coming from behind to equalise thanks to Ricky Miller’s shot on the turn just before half-time.
The Hatters began on the front foot with Charlie Walker, Charlie Smith, Miller and Luke Rooney having shots blocked in the opening 15 minutes.
But it was Dunstable that took the lead on 20 minutes when home striker Scott Davies finished coolly past Elliot Justham from 15 yards.
Walker nodded wide for the Town on the half-hour, but after Miller’s shot on the turn was parried by home goalkeeper Luke Chambers, just before the break a similar effort from the Hatters striker did squirm home following Shaun Whalley’s left-wing cross.
After half-time Town skipper Alex Lacey saw a header from a Whalley corner somehow saved by Chambers with the goal gaping.
The Hatters continued to press. Whalley, Rooney, Miller and Jim Stevenson all saw efforts blocked and, as time ticked down, another Lacey header was saved by Chambers and a cross-cum-shot from Stevenson struck the crossbar.
But with no further goals the tie needed to be decided by penalties, with Justham the Town hero, saving Dunstable’s third kick. Rooney, Whalley, Stevenson and Walker were all successful for the Hatters and Miller had the final word of the night with the winning penalty to make it 5-3.
The Hatters now face a trip to Stotfold in the quarter-final.
