Mr Blobby witnesses wonder strike
The year was 1994. Noel Edmonds' House Party was the nation's favourite Saturday night show and Scott Oakes was the terrace darling at Kenilworth Road. The two, randomly, would collide on this day 20 years ago, for a certain Mr Blobby - the pink and yellow-spotted character from Noel's BBC show - made an appearance at Kenilworth Road for the Hatters' crunch Division One (now Championship) fixture with Derby County.
Mr Blobby was probably struggling to find leg room in the main stand seats as he watched firstly the Town take the lead through Paul Telfer and then the Rams equalise through by Michael Forsyth's effort.
But then the magic moment came. With 16 minutes left on the clock Oakes picked up the ball in his own half and ran at the Derby defence. And ran, and ran and ran. Weaving past the wearing visiting defence the midfielder then capped a superb solo run with a shot to finish: blasting an unstoppable shot past Martin Taylor to bring the house down.
A goal worthy of winning any game it must have made whoever was inside that Mr Blobby suit smile as much as the grin on the costume itself.
