On this day: The Town beat Chelsea and Tottenham...and lose to Exeter
There once was a time that the Town rubbed shoulders with the best in the land. And beat them.
Take Tottenham, for instance. The Hatters brushed aside Spurs 3-0 in an FA Cup fifth qualifying round tie on this day in 1897.
Thirty-eight years later, on 16th January 1937, 23,401 squeezed inside Kenilworth Road to witness the Town beat Chelsea 2-0, also in an FA Cup tie.
I guess we should mention that this day in the Hatters’ history isn’t all rosy. A 7-0 walloping at Palace in 1929 and a 5-1 thrashing at Exeter in 1965 a testament to that.
But forget those, though, and instead close your eyes and picture David Moss, Paul Price and Ricky Hill pirouetting past a Pirates defence as the Town beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 at Kenilworth Road on this day in 1979.
