13th January in the Hatters' history
Do you remember it? Luton were winning at Anfield. A young whippersnapper called Kurt Nogan had scored at the Kop end against Liverpool on his debut in the top flight.
It was 13th January 1990 and the last – and currently only – time the Town played in the top tier of English football on this day in the history books.
What else do you remember about 13th January? What about old Bontcho? Bontcho Guentchev? The Bulgarian midfielder joined the Town in the summer of 1995 but, despite his pedigree and 12 caps for his country, he could only score 10 goals in Luton colours in two seasons. But one came on this day in a 3-1 win over Southend United at Kenilworth Road.
After his spell in Bedfordshire, Bontcho went back to Bulgaria and – according to Wikipedia – scored 20 goals in 32 games for CSKA Sofia. But he loved the UK so much he then came back and played non-league for Hendon and Carshalton.
Смесен, by the way, is Bulgarian for “mixed” and that’s exactly what the Town’s record on this day is like: five wins, five defeat and four draws from the 14 games.
