Town triumph in County Cup tie

A strong Town development side saw off Leighton Town on Tuesday night to set-up a Bedfordshire Senior Cup semi-final tie against Barton Rovers.

A first-half penalty from Jon Shaw had the Hatters on their way before David Viana struck with 14 minutes left to send the Town through to the last four of the competition.

As well as the victory, there were a number of pluses for the Hatters, including 90 minutes for defenders Fraser Franks, Anthony Charles and Alex Lacey.

The Town had the lead seven minutes before the interval when Franks’ goal-bound header was handballed on the goal-line and Shaw drilled home the subsequent penalty.

After the break the Hatters continued to dominate and Viana popped up with a second on 76 minutes.

Leighton pushed for a late consolation but youth team goalkeeper Craig King – on for the injured Elliot Justham – was able to help the Hatters keep a clean sheet.

Town: Justham (sub King 69); Jibodu, Lacey, Charles, Franks; Ferdinand, Viana, Meade (sub C. Smith 81), Rees; Shaw, Banton (sub McKenzie-Lowe 88).
