Lafayette gets an hour in dev squad defeat

The Town development squad fell to their first defeat of the season on Monday night following a 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon in the Final Third Development League Cup.

In a game of few chances, the Wombles scored their winner from a corner with 12 minutes left on the clock.

The match, however, saw a number of senior Town players in action, including striker Ross Lafayette who impressed in a 65-minute spell on his return after a hernia operation. Matt Robinson, Luke Rooney, Jake Howells, Alex Lacey and Paul Connolly all got 90 minutes.

Lafayette and Lacey had the Town’s best chances but it was the home side that ran out narrow victors.

Youth team manager Paul Driver, who took charge of the fixture, said: “The most important aspect of the game was getting minutes into the legs of a number of senior professionals.

“That was a massive plus in a really competitive game, especially for Ross who created a number of chances by himself.

“The goal we conceded was disappointing, it was from a set-piece. From a very early stage you knew the game would be decided by a moment like that and it’s frustrating that we were on the receiving end of one.”

Town dev: King, Longden, Fitzsimons, Connolly, Lacey, Ngwala (sub Maguraushe 60), Howells, Robinson, Isaac (sub Justin 80), Rooney, Lafayette (sub Tayali 65). Subs not used: Gooch, McGhan-George.
