Hatters youngsters win again
The Town Under-18s continued their fine run of form by coming from a goal down to beat Dagenham & Redbridge in the League Cup on Saturday morning.
A spectacular over-head kick from Ian Rees and a late winner from Arel Amu kept up the Hatters’ chances of qualifying from the group stage of the competition.
The Town went close a number of times in the first period with efforts from Charlie Smith, but it was the Daggers that took the lead when the Hatters failed to clear a free-kick.
In truth Dagenham’s threat was coming solely from set pieces but Rees brought the Town level with an acrobatic bicycle kick on the stroke of half-time.
It was all the Town after the break as Paul Driver’s side limited the hosts to very little opportunities to test goalkeeper Craig King.
Going forward in search of a winner, the Hatters came close with efforts from Rees and Amu, with the latter having a shot tipped wide by the Daggers’ keeper.
Half-time substitute Isaac Galliford came even closer when he saw a shot bounce off of the crossbar and then hit the post, but the Hatters won it with two minutes to go when Amu finished well.
Having played all the first-year scholars available to him, Driver was pleased to come away from Essex with three points.
“The biggest plus of the game was the performances of the first-years,” he said.
“With an important FA Youth Cup tie coming up, and witnessing their performances in training in recent weeks we decided to give all of them a start and I was delighted with their attitude and application – and to come from a goal behind to win away from home shows terrific character.
“A number of the players were involved in the first team training sessions this week and the feedback we received from the management was positive so it’s been a good week.”
