Take the 8/13 on a Hatters win
Followers of this column would have been cursing their luck on Tuesday after the Town somehow failed to turn their dominance into a victory at Hereford.
However, as Paul Buckle and captain Ronnie Henry said afterwards, it was just “one of those nights”, and the chance to put things right comes around quickly with a home clash against promotion rivals Dartford at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.
Despite the midweek disappointment at Edgar Street the Hatters are still 13/8 favourites with division sponsors Blue Square to lift the title.
And Blue Square go 8/13 that the Town can see off the Darts – who lie sixth in the table following a superb start to life in non-league’s top flight following promotion last season.
Few bookmakers would have envisaged that they would price up Tony Burman’s side as a 4/1 chance to gain all three points at Kenilworth Road and the Darts can take heart from the Town’s indifferent home form as well as some impressive away performances from themselves, including a win at Grimsby and a draw at Wrexham.
However, it was hard not to be impressed with the Town at Hereford, even though they left Edgar Street empty handed. While it may not have been on the same scale as Celtic against Barcelona, the Hatters put in arguably their best performance of the season yet came away with nothing.
Buckle’s side remain in good shape but will want to improve their home form against the Darts. Blue Square go 7/1 that the Town go behind before coming back to win, given their penchant for conceding the first goal in matches. However, Dartford will be without top goalscorer Harry Crawford through suspensions whilst fellow striker Adam Birchall has returned to Gillingham having been on-loan.
With the frustration of being denied what would have been a deserved three points in midweek the Town’s players will no doubt be fired up to put things right and Blue Square’s 13/8 on the Hatters at -1 in the handicap market cannot be sniffed at.
