Expect goals at Kingfield
The Town start 2013 as joint second favourites to lift the Blue Square Bet Premier and go in search of a winning start to the New Year at Woking tomorrow.
League sponsors have the Hatters and Newport County as 100/30 to win the division behind 5/2 favourites Grimsby.
At Woking on New Year’s Day the Hatters have been backed into an odds on 5/6 quote by Blue Square to beat the Cards who they saw off 3-1 at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day. Blue Square have the draw at 5/2 and a home win at 11/4.
The Cards’ home record of six wins, one and four defeats is identical to the Town’s record away from home. Two of defeats for the Hatters have come against leaders Grimsby and second placed Newport. Woking’s four home defeats, meanwhile, have come against Braintree, Tamworth, Southport and Alfreton – four of the division’s bottom 10 clubs.
Garry Hill’s side haven’t tasted a home league defeat since November 12 but have only won three of their last 10 league fixtures and were trounced 7-0 at Hyde and 5-1 at Grimsby and of course went down 3-1 against the Hatters last week.
Granted the Town have found consistency tough. Indeed, you have to go back to October 27 for the last league win on the road when a last-minute penalty from Scott Rendell clinched a 2-1 victory at Forest Green.
It’s hard to ignore the fact that given both sides’ penchant for scoring and conceding goals but it’s no surprise that Blue Square go 8/13 for over 2.5 goals.
If the Hatters can keep a clean sheet – and the recent signs have been encouraging – then the firepower in attack should put the hosts under enough pressure to get the Town off to a winning start to the year.
