PRE-SEASON MATCH PREVIEW | LUTON TOWN V NORWICH CITY

Town take on Norwich City this evening at Kenilworth Road

25 July 2018

The Hatters play their first game at Kenilworth Road of the 2018/19 pre-season schedule as they ramp up their preparations for the new Sky Bet League One campaign, with Championship outfit Norwich City making the journey here from East Anglia.

Nathan Jones' side were last in action on Saturday, when they defeated St Albans City 6-3, having beaten Chesham United 5-1 the previous Wednesday.

Norwich have just returned from a pre-season tour of Germany, their last game there finishing 1-1 against Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

THE GAFFER SAYS:

"We did the same last year when we played Leicester and then we played Scunthorpe. We're entering into an important time now. We will shorten the training, freshen it up, sharpen it up and then be ready to go.

"We like to build up the tests. You don't tend to play sides from your own level in pre-season ironically enough, so you want good tests. We didn't want to play two Championship sides, so we're playing a Championship and a League Two side, one that we felt was a very strong test. Notts County were strong last year, they've recruited very, very well and they will be a real stern test. It'll be the equivalent to a League One test, so that's why we do that.

"Norwich is a different test. We like to have a big game as well, something a bit different for the fans to have, but it's a real good test for us and that's why we had Leicester last year and why we've got Norwich this year, which was done quite early.

"Then we tend to build things up, we started with Hitchin, we've kind of built up the levels and then the only thing that was a little out of sync was the game we had away against HNK Rijeka, which we specifically picked because we felt they were a top Croatian side. We worked a lot out of possession and we felt that we would get that test."

WHO?

Now in their third season in the Sky Bet Championship following their relegation from the Premier League in 2016, Daniel Farke will be looking to build on his side's 14th placed finish last season. The former Borussia Dortmund II boss took over at Carrow Road at the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign, bringing in a number of player from the German leagues, with the likes of Christoph Zimmermann hitting the ground running. James Maddison was their main outlet, netting 15 times from midfield, before making a big money move to Leicester City last month.

PLAYED BEFORE?

The Hatters have faced the Canaries on 92 occasions – but our meeting in January 2013 will live long in the memory, and not just because it was the most recent. It was of course the FA Cup fourth round, where Scott Rendell netted in a 1-0 victory for the Town – becoming the first Non-League side to knock out a top-flight side since 1989.
