Watch | Nathan Jones pleased with win against Boreham Wood

Manager Nathan Jones was pleased his side were able to overcome a tricky pre-season test against a physical, direct Boreham Wood side this afternoon in the beaming sun at Meadow Park.

After going a goal down, substitutes, as they did a number of times last season, helped turn the game on its head – with Jordan Clark adding two more to his pre-season tally, as well as a superb goal from Carlos Mendes Gomes.

“It was a very competitive game,” Nathan Jones said pitchside. “It’s a very hot day so there wasn't much flow in the game but it was a good test. We came up against a direct test and we haven’t had that yet in pre-season.

“They had one chance in the first half and took it, we weren’t aggressive enough and we allowed it to be a pre-season game - I didn’t want that. Then when we made the changes, it gave us a real impetuous, a lot of people who came on really took the game by the scruff of the neck and it was a really good run out.”

Whilst continuing to assess his players, the gaffer is particularly pleased with the squad depth he now has at his disposal, saying: “Four or five players aren’t here so it shows that we have really good depth, and we are going to need that in the championship. There is good competition and I’m very pleased with how certain people have settled – people like Carlos, Ade has only been with us a few days now and Fred looked a real threat as well. We have some real good threats in the building, and I thought Joe Morrell was excellent.”

He firstly picked out Mendes Gomes for special praise, adding: “We have gone out and brought Carlos for a lot of money for us, so he has to have something. He is just repaying what we thought he had, he will get better because his physicality will go up, his quality will continue to show but he has shown already that he can score goals – three already – so he is in a good place.”

And whilst the new boys have been impressing during pre-season thus far, it is Clark who leads the way in terms of goal contribution.

With a little smirk, the gaffer said: “Jordan Clark is probably the best player in the world at the moment! He is outstanding, we love him, nothing surprises us because we see it every day. Wherever we ask him to play, he is just fantastic in everything he does, and we’re delighted to have him.”
