Three second half goals sent the Town Under-21s through to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup for the first time with a superb 3-0 win over Brighton at Clarence Park.
A goalless first half saw Jack Lorentzen-Jones go closest for the Hatters with a free-kick from the edge of the box that flashed wide.
But the second half was anything but quiet as the Town, knowing only a win would do for them to progress past the group stages, pushed for victory.
Josh Phillips spurned a huge chance to put the Town in front 11 minutes after the restart when shooting into the side-netting from close range.
But the winger did not let that disappointment affect him as on the hour his left-wing trickery saw his cross converted by Dylan Stitt from eight yards.
Brighton, knowing a point would send them through at the Hatters’ expense, came close to levelling when Harry Howell’s free-kick flew wide.
The Town almost doubled their lead on 66 minutes when Taylan Harris teed up Lorentzen-Jones but his drive from the edge of the area was held by Hugo Fisher in the Brighton goal.
However, the Hatters were not to be denied with seven minutes to go. Jamie Odegah robbed Seagulls captain Charlie Penman of the ball in the box to square for Phillips to tap home to make it 2-0.
As time ticked down Brighton threw caution to the wind and a goalmouth scramble saw the Town prevent the visitors for pinching one back as the clock struck 90.
The officials added 10 minutes of injury time and but Hatters defence continued to hold firm in the closing stages despite heavy pressure from the Seagulls.
But with the game almost up the Town youngsters added extra gloss to seal a wonderful victory when Tate Xavier-Jones was upended in the box and the under-18s striker dusted himself down to convert the resultant penalty.
Victory ensures Alex Lawless’ side are in the hat for the second round of the competition as one of the best group runners-up.
Congratulations boys!
