We are excited to announce the signing of talented young midfielder Sverre Sandal from Norwegian top-flight club KFUM on a permanent transfer, subject to international clearance.
The 22-year-old comes to English football after spending the past four years with the Oslo-based outfit.
Sandal, who stands at 6ft 3ins tall and can play in any of the central midfield roles, started 25 of his 26 appearances last season as KFUM finished 12th in the Eliteserien table.
After completing his medical at The Brache, Sverre said: “I’m very excited. Ever since I heard about the interest I’ve been looking forward to coming over, signing for Luton Town and giving my all.
“Everyone in Norway knows Luton’s story, and when I look at my former club, we’ve had a similar rise to the top division unexpectedly. I understand it’s been a tough two years, but it seems like we are in the beginning of rebuilding and it’s something I want to be a part of.
“I’ve seen that the fans are passionate and from what I’ve heard, Luton is a hard-working town, which is something that suits me well.
“I like to bring the game up the field, play forwards, win my duels, work hard and help the team. I’m so eager to prove myself here and can’t wait to start training.”
Manager Jack Wilshere was delighted with his latest addition, saying: “Sverre is someone we’ve been aware of for a while and have had him watched on several occasions.
“He’s a very talented midfielder who can play as a six or an eight, with the ability to start attacks from deep with his range of passing and ability to go past people.
“With his size and power, we think he’s going to suit English football well and we’re looking forward to seeing how he can help us progress as a team.”
The story so far
Born to an English mother and Norwegian father, Sverre started his career in the youth system at Hauketo, a hot-bed of Norwegian football that has produced the likes of former Hull City forward Adama Diomande, Bodø/Glimt’s Norway defender Haitam Aleesami and Osame Sahraoui, now of Lille and a Moroccan international.
In his early teens he signed for fourth-tier club Nordstrand IF, and after breaking into the first-team squad as an 18-year-old, he was quickly signed by KFUM, but immediately loaned back to Nordstrand for the 2022 season, making 20 appearances.
In his first season with KFUM on a full-time basis, he helped the Kåffa to promotion to the top-flight for the first time in their history, and has made 26 appearances in both of the 30-game Eliteserien campaigns the Ekeberg club have competed in.
Sverre’s form in his maiden top-flight campaign when they finished eighth saw him dubbed ‘Ekeberg’s Yaya Toure’ by TV pundits.
Last season he netted three times and provided four assists as KFUM finished 12th, and he leaves the club with 108 appearances and ten goals to his name in all competitions over the past three seasons.
Velkommen til Luton, Sverre!
