Luton Town is delighted to announce the appointment of William Lancefield as the club’s new Head of Recruitment.
Lancefield joins from Heart of Midlothian, where he held the same position, and brings a wealth of experience to Kenilworth Road. He has previously worked in scouting and analyst roles at Southampton, Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Following a comprehensive end-of-season review of recruitment and scouting operations, Lancefield will lead the club’s recruitment department, drawing on his extensive expertise to further develop a live, data-informed approach to talent identification aligned with both the club’s immediate playing philosophy and the continuously evolving squad strategy.
Town CEO Gary Sweet welcomed the appointment, commenting: “William’s arrival is a significant coup for Luton Town.
“His experience, knowledge of the game and clear understanding of our needs made him the outstanding candidate for this pivotal role. We’re looking forward to working with him and excited about the impact he can make as we evolve our recruitment structure and processes in preparation for the new season and beyond.”
Lancefield added: "I’m delighted to be joining Luton Town. After I met with the club and learned more about the its potential and ambition, I knew straight away this was one I wanted to be a part of.
"I understand what it takes to build strong, competitive squads, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Jack and the wider staff to recruit players who reflect Luton's identity and ambition."
Everyone at Luton Town welcomes William to the club and wishes him every success in his new role, with a full interview to follow on club channels when he officially starts on 19th June.
At the same time, we bid farewell to two members of the department who have served the Hatters so well in recent seasons, as Jay Socik departs after more than five years as Head of Recruitment Analysis, while Alexander Wilkinson moves on after four years as a senior scout.
Jay departs having contributed greatly to the club’s ultimate rise. After a period of working as a freelancer before he brought his data expertise to the club full-time, Jay joined full time in 2021 to help the Town consolidate its Championship status and then helped build competitive squads for two play-off campaigns, one promotion, and an honourable Premier League campaign.
We would sincerely like to thank Jay, and Xander, for their valuable contributions in that success and wish them both well for their futures.
William will lead engagement with the rest of the department as Yousuf Sajjad continues in his role as Player Recruitment Manager, Marc Tracy as Chief Scout, and he will inevitably lean on the local experience of Mick Harford, who remains our Senior Scout alongside his club ambassadorial role.
