The Hatters bounced back to winning ways as a fourth win and fourth clean sheet of the season earned a comfortable 3-0 win at Burton Albion.
It was a day of firsts as the Town cruised to three points in their new green away shirt with Lasse Nordås hitting his first goal in Luton colours to open the scoring in the 18th minute.
The lead was doubled in first-half stoppage time when Milli Alli curled in a fine strike from the edge of the box for his first goal of the season.
And the points were sealed just before the hour when Zack Nelson scored the first league goal of his career when taking a pass from Nordås inside the penalty area.
It was a comprehensive performance on the road – one that will not only see three trees planted at Power Court but, more importantly, banish the memories of last weekend’s narrow home defeat to Cardiff.
Matt Bloomfield made three changes from seven days ago with Gideon Kodua, Zack Nelson and Jerry Yates in from the start with Kal Naismith, Liam Walsh and Nahki Wells dropping to the bench.
The game when it began took some time to get going – indeed Burton played five minutes a man light with striker Jake Beeley off the field receiving treatment.
But once it did get going the Hatters soon got down to business and, in the 18th minute, Nordås broke his duck and the deadlock. George Saville – who broke up play for fun all afternoon – slid into feed Nelson who in turn sent the Norwegian away. They say you need a bit of luck as a striker and Nordås certainly got a little bit here as his deflected shot scuttled underneath Burton goalkeeper Jordan Amissah.
Ahead, the Town pressed, roared on by their massed ranks of supporters behind one goal with more trees puns chanted than you should shake a… well, tree at.
Dominating, the Hatters should have doubled their lead shortly after the half-hour when Alli’s whipped in cross from the left found Yates at the back post unmarked – only for the striker to side-foot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Josh Keeley – who by no means was a spectator during the 90 minutes – kept out an awkward bouncing ball moments later as the hosts pushed for a leveller.
But back came the Town, and they were a lick of paint away from doubling the lead on 37 minutes when Nelson’s excellent hit from the edge of the penalty area pinged back off the post.
However, a second seemed inevitable and at the end of the first half Alli supplied it. Nelson was again heavily involved, haring into the box to fire a shot at the legs of Amissah. The ball fell for Alli on the edge of the box and he swept a beautiful first-time finish into the far corner of the net.
With the Town in command at the break, Burton began the second half with urgency and the Brewers came close to reducing the deficit on 49 minutes when Beesley curled a shot wide when well-placed.
But the Hatters made them pay shortly before the hour mark when Nelson got the goal his performance deserved. Jordan Clark, captain in the absence of Naismith, was at his orchestrating best, sending Nordås on his way down the left. The striker held off the attentions of the Burton defence before squaring to Nelson who danced into the box and planted a terrific finish back across the goalkeeper for 3-0.
At the other end Keeley then stopped another decent opportunity for the hosts on 64 minutes, parrying a Tyrese Shade header to safety before Bloomfield began to ring the changes with his side on top.
One of those substitutes, Nahki Wells, stung the fingertips of Amissah with a turn and shot from the edge of the box on 77 minutes. It would prove to be the Town’s final clear-cut chance of the game with the last word reserved for Keeley, who maintained another clean sheet with a fine save from a speculative effort from Julian Larsson in stoppage time.
So tree points and tree goals. Power Court’s looking greener already. And so is the table: the Town are up to seventh.
It’s Barnet next in the Virtu Trophy at the Kenny so get down to see us before the international break.
We’ll see you then.
